Which Pre-Filter Is Right
for Your Application?
Start with the filter position, operating conditions and equipment requirements. These six options differ in construction, installation depth and maintenance approach; matching the outside dimensions alone does not establish equivalent performance.
| Pre-filter type | Key difference | Consider for | Confirm before ordering |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cardboard Pleated Panel Filter | A disposable pleated panel with a cardboard frame. | Routine prefiltration in dry ventilation and air-handling systems. | Actual outer dimensions, slot depth and the airflow data for the selected size. Flag any condensation or water exposure. |
| Cardboard Fiberglass Panel Filter | Glass-fibre media with 24, 45 or 95 mm listed depths. | Coarse-particle prefiltration where a glass-fibre panel matches the equipment specification. | Grade by model, available depth, humidity and airflow. Moisture-resistant cardboard is not a waterproof frame. |
| Pleated Primary Panel Filter | Pleated polyester media with metal or plastic frame options. | Fresh-air, return-air and general industrial ventilation requiring a framed pleated pre-filter. | Required grade, frame material and 45 or 95 mm depth. Compare resistance at the intended airflow. |
| Pre Filter — Ambient Temperature | Metal-frame options with flat, pleated or inner-and-outer frame construction. | Ambient-temperature ventilation or compatible equipment needing a particular frame and mounting arrangement. | Construction, frame material, actual face dimensions and 45 or 90 mm depth. Confirm the operating environment. |
| Air Conditioning Filter | A slim aluminium frame with washable woven polyamide media. | HVAC fresh-air or return-air prefiltration where a shallow mesh panel is specified. | Required filtration performance and 10, 15 or 21 mm slot depth. Confirm the cleaning procedure and reuse criteria. |
| High Temperature Filter Panel | A framed, supported glass-fibre panel for heated air. | Hot-air systems and drying equipment requiring a temperature-suitable pre-filter. | Continuous and peak temperatures, exposure duration, airflow, frame and seal compatibility. Confirm the temperature rating for the supplied assembly. |
Four checks before you choose
01 / Check the actual fit
Measure the outside width, height and depth, then check the mounting slot, gasket and retaining arrangement. For replacements, send the existing label and a photograph. Nominal inch sizes should be checked against the listed millimetre dimensions.
02 / Compare at the operating airflow
Read airflow and pressure drop together for the selected filter size. A resistance figure without its airflow or face-velocity condition is not enough for a meaningful comparison. Check the required filtration performance and the pressure allowance available in the system.
03 / Describe the environment
Share the air temperature, humidity and type of contamination, including any condensation, oil mist or sticky particles. A metal frame alone does not make a filter suitable for high temperatures. Heated-air applications require review of the complete filter assembly and its installation.
04 / Plan maintenance
Confirm whether the selected product is disposable or washable. Our Air Conditioning Filter is listed with washable media, but cleaning methods and reuse criteria need confirmation. Do not assume other panels can be washed. Monitor pressure drop, airflow and physical condition against the equipment and product instructions.
Keep the test standard with the grade. If your specification names EN 779 G3 or G4, supply that original requirement. Do not treat it as a direct ISO 16890 equivalent; request the applicable test data. The pre-filter also needs to suit any downstream filtration stages required by the system.
Pre-Filter Sizes & Custom Options

- Dimensions & installation depth
- Check the listed sizes on each product page. For a different size, send the actual width, height and depth, plus the available housing space. We will confirm whether the selected construction can be supplied to suit.
- Filter media & frame material
- Our range includes synthetic-fibre, glass-fibre and polyamide-mesh media, with cardboard, metal or plastic frames depending on the product. Select the construction to match the operating conditions and filtration requirement.
- Sealing & mounting details
- Include any gasket location, retaining clips, airflow direction or special frame features shown on the existing filter. A photo or drawing helps us check compatibility with your installation.
Available materials, depths and custom configurations vary by model. Final dimensions and specifications require confirmation before ordering.

Where Are Pre-Filters Used?
Pre-filters capture larger airborne particles before they reach downstream components or finer filters. The suitable product depends on the installation, airflow and operating environment.
HVAC & Air Handling Units
Use suitable pre-filters at the first filtration stage to help reduce dust reaching air-handling components and downstream filters. Check the required airflow, pressure allowance and housing dimensions.

Provide initial-stage particle filtration in compatible factory ventilation systems. Oil mist, sticky particles or special contaminants require a separate review of the filtration solution.

Pre-Filter Questions, Answered
Practical answers for selecting, replacing and maintaining your pre-filters.
What does a pre-filter do?
A pre-filter captures larger particles at an early filtration stage, helping to limit dust reaching downstream equipment and finer filters. The required final filtration performance depends on the complete system and its application. A pre-filter should not be assumed to replace a required fine-filter or HEPA stage.
Are all pre-filters washable?
No. Our Air Conditioning Filter is listed with washable polyamide media; confirm the cleaning method and reuse criteria for the supplied product. The Cardboard Pleated Panel Filter is disposable. Do not assume other products can be washed simply because their frame is metal or their media looks similar. View the Air Conditioning Filter.
When should a pre-filter be replaced?
There is no single replacement interval for every installation. Follow the equipment and filter instructions, monitoring pressure drop against the permitted limit, operating airflow and physical condition. Dust loading and operating hours affect service life. Damage, poor sealing or moisture-related deterioration also require attention; do not rely on appearance or a fixed calendar interval alone. Read the installation and maintenance guidance.
Can I replace a filter with another of the same size?
Matching dimensions is only the first check. Confirm filtration performance, pressure drop at the operating airflow, frame depth, sealing and mounting compatibility. The replacement must also suit the temperature, humidity and contaminants in the system. Send the existing label and photos if you need help reviewing a replacement.
Are G3/G4 and ISO 16890 grades interchangeable?
No. EN 779 and ISO 16890 use different classification and test methods, so a G3 or G4 label should not be treated as a direct ISO 16890 equivalent. Provide the test standard and grade in your original specification and request the applicable product test data. See the filter selection guide.
Can you supply a different size or frame?
Send the selected filter type, actual outside width, height and depth, quantity and operating conditions. A drawing or photo can help identify mounting and sealing details. Available frame materials and custom dimensions vary by model and must be confirmed before ordering. Review sizes and custom options.
