G4, F7, MERV and ePM1: Reading Air Filter Grade Labels

Filter labels can use different classification systems. A purchasing request that contains only a grade may leave the intended standard unclear. Keeping the full designation with the product information makes replacement discussions more precise.

Recognise the different systems

G4 and F7 are examples of classifications associated with the older EN 779 system. MERV is associated with ASHRAE 52.2. ISO 16890 uses classifications based on particulate matter efficiency, including ePM1, ePM2.5 and ePM10, alongside the Coarse group.

These names describe classification systems, not the physical size or frame construction of a filter. The classification and the installation details are both needed.

Copy the complete label

Record the standard, grade and any percentage shown. For an ISO 16890 designation, the group name alone may omit useful information from the original specification. Photograph the label rather than shortening it during transcription.

ISO describes the scope of this general-ventilation classification system on its ISO 16890-1 reference page. Use the applicable project specification when establishing the required classification.

Avoid direct grade substitutions

Do not treat a chart of approximate relationships as proof that one product meets another requirement. The systems evaluate and classify performance differently. If the existing specification uses a different standard from the proposed product, make that difference explicit and obtain clarification.

Similarly, a particle classification does not establish a gas-removal capability or confirm that a filter fits a particular housing.

Keep HEPA requirements separate

HEPA and ULPA classifications belong to a different specification context from ordinary ventilation grades. When requesting a HEPA or ULPA filter, provide the complete requirement rather than attempting to infer it from a general-ventilation label.

Apply the information to an enquiry

For CINRIWA products, use the classifications actually stated for the selected configuration. Do not add an assumed MERV or ePM rating to a listing that does not provide one. Send the original label, required standard, dimensions and airflow through our contact page when clarification is needed.
